Status

« Back to question board
People talk about the status some credit cards give you such as having a gold or platinum card and I want to know do people really care what credit card you give them at the store or restaurant your at? Do they give you better service because they see you with a gold or platinum card? Or is it just an ego thing? Thank you.
Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the question.

I haven't really experienced anything like that. I had an ANZ Low Rate MasterCard for a long time and just recently a Rewards Gold. I haven't noticed any difference in people's attitudes, but perhaps that's just my experience.

I guess people associate platinum cards with status because they have much stricter lending criteria. Most high-end platinum cards require you to have an annual income of at least $70,000, so some may see them as a demonstration of wealth.

It's also worth noting that the lines have been blurred by some recent low-end platinums (such as the Citibank Clear Platinum), which is platinum in name and colour, but is really a low-to-mid range card.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else has had any experiences with this.

Cameron.
